Topsoil regeneration

The topsoil layer has the highest concentration of organic matter and microorganisms.

This is where most of the biological activity in the soil takes place.  Healthy topsoil, with abundant organic matter, micro-organisms, and sufficient water, produces a higher yield and better quality of crops.

When the soil is mismanaged, it loses its organic matter and dries out, potentially leading to soil erosion, desertification, and barren land.

To prevent further erosion, EWI and the cooperatives train farmers to use better agricultural methods, including no tilling, and the use of natural compost, natural plant food,  and plant cover. These practices help increase water infiltration and reduce erosion.
