The Marre-Roseau region is 98% deforested, which contributes to the overall fragility and severe degradation of the environment.

Combining agricultural production with environmental restoration is vital to the future of Haiti’s food production. Planting more trees is an obvious solution, but not easily implemented. This is because when trees reach a certain height they are typically cut down for charcoal production - the country’s primary cooking fuel.

EWI has adopted the agroforestry approach, which utilizes fruit trees intercropped with vegetables to help restore topsoil quality, stop erosion, and increase agricultural production.
